North American Whitetail hair-on pillows have a different appeal: the tonal variation runs from warm tawny browns to deep grays, with a subtler, more versatile texture that fits rustic, modern-cabin, and even neutral-palette interiors without competing with other elements in the room. The other major difference is sourcing. Most axis hides are imported from Texas ranches or South America with limited traceability. Our North American Whitetail hides come from our own closed-loop supply chain, right here in Wisconsin.
Will a hair-on deer pillow shed?
This is a common concern people have with deer hair-on products. Deer hair is hollow, which means it can break and shed if the hide wasn't tanned properly. The quality of the tan is everything. Our hides are naturally tanned by hand at Driftless Tannery in Argyle, WI, which locks the hair follicles in place far more effectively than home or budget tanning methods. You should expect minimal loose hairs when the pillow is brand new, but a properly tanned whitetail pillow will not progressively shed the way a poorly processed hide does.
Do hair-on deer pillows have an odor?
Our natural, bark-tanned hides should have little to no animal smell. You may notice a faint, natural leather scent when the pillow first arrives which most people find pleasant, similar to a quality leather jacket. If a hair-on product has a strong or unpleasant odor, that's typically a sign of incomplete tanning or poor processing. If you're sensitive to scent, simply air the pillow in a well-ventilated room (out of the sun) after unboxing.
How do I care for a hair-on deer pillow?
Keep it simple: avoid direct sunlight and excess moisture, and you're 90% of the way there. For regular maintenance, brush lightly with the grain of the hair using a soft-bristle brush to remove dust. If something spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth. Never soak the hide or use water-based cleaners. For a deeper refresh, lightly dust with cornstarch or a small amount of borax powder, let it sit for a few minutes, then gently vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Hair-on hides are naturally resistant to dust mites and don't trap allergens the way fabric upholstery does. With basic care, these pillows age beautifully and last for years.

Every hide used is a byproduct of wild-harvested North American Whitetail deer processed for venison at Deer's Meat Locker in Deer Park, Wisconsin. Nothing is raised or harvested specifically for the hide, we recover a material that would otherwise go to waste from the game processing supply chain. From there, hides are sent to our American tannery partner, Driftless Tannery in Argyle, WI. We can proudly trace every hide from the field to your living room!
